Dab Rigs South Africa – If you have been hearing more about dab rigs lately, you are not imagining things. As the quality of concentrates available in South Africa has improved, so has the interest in the equipment to properly enjoy them. This is the guide you need if you are new to it – what a dab rig is, how it works, what you need to get started, and where to find one in SA.

What Is a Dab Rig?

A dab rig is a water pipe purpose-built for consuming cannabis concentrates – wax, shatter, rosin, live resin, bubble hash, and similar extracts. It looks similar to a glass bong but is designed differently to suit concentrates rather than flower.

The key difference is the banger (or nail) – a heat-resistant cup, usually quartz, where the concentrate is applied. You heat the banger with a torch, let it cool to the right temperature, apply a small amount of concentrate, and inhale as it vaporises. The water chamber cools the vapour before it reaches you.

The result, when done properly, is a significantly more flavour-forward experience than combustion. High-quality concentrates carry terpene profiles that you lose entirely when burning flower – a rig is the equipment that lets those profiles come through cleanly.

The market for dab rigs in South Africa has grown noticeably in recent years, with several local online retailers now stocking a range of options. Entry-level rigs are available from around R595 to R875 (incl. VAT). While premium international brands such as Goody Glass USA and Focus V are also being stocked by local suppliers, with prices reaching R1,500 and beyond.

Why Dab Rigs South Africa Are Different from Bongs

This comes up constantly, so it is worth being direct about:

Size. Dab rigs are smaller than bongs by design. Less water volume means less surface area for vapour to interact with, which preserves more terpene character. A large bong used for concentrates will give you a filtered, cooler experience – but you will lose much of the flavour that makes quality extracts worth the price.

Airflow. Bongs are calibrated for the volume of smoke flower produces. Dab rigs are calibrated for the smaller, denser volume of vapour from concentrates. Using a bong for dabs is not wrong – but it is not optimal.

Attachments. Bongs use bowls. Rigs use bangers or nails. The joint size (14mm or 18mm, male or female) determines which accessories are compatible with your rig.

What You Need: Get Started With Dab Rigs South Africa

A basic dab setup has a few components:

The rig itself. Compact is better – look for something in the 15โ€“25cm range. Mini rigs from brands like MJ Arsenal are designed specifically for concentrates and represent some of the best builds in this size class.

A quartz banger. Quartz is the standard for a reason – it heats evenly, holds temperature well, and does not affect flavour the way titanium or ceramic can. A 14mm or 18mm banger (match your rig’s joint size) is where to start.

A butane torch. The kind used for crรจme brรปlรฉe. You need enough heat to properly season and then use the banger. Small kitchen torches often don’t get hot enough for consistent results.

A carb cap. A carb cap covers the banger after you’ve applied the concentrate, creating a low-pressure environment that lets it vaporise at lower temperatures. Low-temperature dabs preserve terpene character – this is where most of the flavour lives.

A dab tool. A small metal or glass implement used to apply the concentrate to the banger. Do not skip this – applying concentrate with anything that is not purpose-made is messy and imprecise.

A timer or infrared thermometer. Once you have heated the banger, you need to let it cool to the right temperature before applying your concentrate. Too hot and you are combusting; too cool and it will not vaporise properly. A 30โ€“45 second cool-down after heating a quartz banger is a common starting point. An infrared thermometer removes the guesswork entirely.

Types of Dab Rigs Available in South Africa

Standard rigs. A single water chamber, straight or angled design. Straightforward to use, clean, and maintain. The right starting point for most people new to concentrates.

Mini rigs. Smaller, more compact – typically 10โ€“18cm. Less water means more flavour is preserved, and the best mini rigs are engineered to outperform their size. MJ Arsenal builds are the benchmark in this category.

Recycler rigs. Water cycles between chambers as you draw, keeping temperatures down and delivering consistent vapour. A step up from standard rigs for users who have the basics dialled in.

Electronic rigs (e-rigs). Battery-powered devices that heat the banger to a precise set temperature, removing the torch entirely. Higher upfront cost but significantly more consistency, especially for temperature-sensitive terpene profiles.

Choosing the Right Banger

The banger is arguably the most important component in your setup. A few things to understand:

Quartz is the standard. Full stop. Quartz heats evenly, holds temperature, and does not contribute off-flavours. Cheap ceramic or titanium bangers are a false economy.

Wall thickness. Thicker walls retain heat longer – useful for larger amounts and low-temperature sessions. Thinner walls heat up faster and are easier to clean.

Flat-top vs. terp slurper. Flat-top bangers are the standard starting point. Terp slurper bangers draw concentrate up through the bottom, improving efficiency and flavour at low temperatures – but they have a steeper learning curve and are better suited once you have the basics down.

Temperature and Why It Matters

Temperature is the single biggest variable in a dabbing session.

  • Below 315ยฐC – Too cool. Concentrate will not fully vaporise.
  • 315โ€“450ยฐC – Low-temperature range. Maximum terpene expression, smoother vapour, slightly less potent hit. Where most flavour-focused users prefer to work.
  • 450โ€“600ยฐC – High-temperature range. More complete vaporisation, larger hit, but terpenes degrade significantly at these temperatures.
  • Above 600ยฐC – Combustion territory. You will lose flavour and potentially damage the banger over time.

An infrared thermometer is worth the investment if you are serious about getting the most from quality concentrates.
